Vishwakarma Puja: When Nepal pauses to worship its tools

Vishwakarma Puja falls today, September 17, marking Kanya Sankranti , meaning the day the sun enters Virgo. Across Nepal, mechanics, engineers, artisans and factory workers set down their tools not to rest, but to worship them. Of Nepali date, this day falls on the first of Ashoj every year.

The festival honors Lord Vishwakarma's birth anniversary, who is the son of Brahma and the mythical architect behind legendary creations some of which are the golden city of Lanka, Dwarka, Indraprastha, even divine weapons like Shiva's Trishul and Indra's Vajra. One popular story tells of him building an entire underwater city in a single night to hide Lord Krishna from demons.

This puja is celebrated based on the solar calender, the reason of why it never shifts to other dates from year to year unlike other lunar festivals we observe such as Teej or Dashain. On this day, tools, machinery and vehicles are cleaned and worshipped alongside an idol of Vishwakarma, with the puja usually performed at the workplace rather than at home. There is a long-standing religious belief that worshipping the tools, machines, and vehicles one uses will make them last longer, prevent them from breaking down while in use, and improve their efficiency

There's also an astrological layer: Saturn (Shani Dev) is said to be Vishwakarma's grandson through his daughter Sandhya, making the day considered auspicious for easing career setbacks or starting new ventures.

Why it matters: In a country still rebuilding after the Bhote Koshi floods, a festival centered on honoring tools and machinery carries extra resonance this year as reconstruction, quite literally, runs through the same instruments this day asks people to pause and appreciate.
