A few days ago, reports said Manchester City had been found guilty of breaking the Premier League's money rules:114 out of 115 charges against them. Manchester United is one of the four clubs that could get paid money because of this.
This case has been going on for years. Now it has finally reached a big moment. If the verdict is confirmed and if City's punishment is severe enough, United along with Arsenal, Liverpool and Tottenham could end up receiving a large payout for seasons they say they were unfairly cheated out of.
WHAT HAPPENED?
-Back in February 2023, the Premier League charged Manchester City with 115 seperate breaches of its financial rules, those were accusations that City didn't accurately report how much money they were spending and earning, stretching back over nine years (2009 to 2018).
-City has always denied every single charge.
-An independent hearing looked at all the evidence, starting in September 2024 and took years to reach a decision.
-According to reports, City has found guilty of all but one of the 115 charges.
-City's own remarks regarding this was the process is ongoing.
A while ago, before this guilty news came out, United along with Arsenal,Liverpool and Tottenham already sent legal papers. These papers save their right to ask fro money from City later, if City is found guilty. This action was done earlier as there remains a time limit on such kind of legal claim and none of them wanted to miss the chance.
If City broke the rules and used that to win trophies and money then other teams like United lost out on things they should have had. SImilar cases has happened before, other clubs successfully got money from Everton after a similar money rules case.
One team, Chelsea decided not to join this claim likely because Chelsea itself has its own seperate money rules problem from years ago.
City has won 6 of the last 7 Premier League titles. If even some of that success is later ruled to have come from breaking financial rules,, that's the entire basis of United's and other clubs compensation argument.
No punishment has been announced yet.
