KATHMANDU/GLOBAL — More than two weeks after glacial-lake outburst that caused a devastating flood through the Bhote Koshi River into Rasuwa, Nuwakot and surrounding districts, fundraising organized by communities in and outside Nepal has served impressively as a disaster response from the community. From New York sidewalks to Seoul's Nepal Street to remote 10k challenges in the UK, Nepalis at home and abroad have leaned on informal networks, diaspora associations, and grassroots organizing to help the affected families through providing financial aid as well as immediate essential supplies. Below is a roundup of the major, verifiable community-level efforts recorded since the August 26 disaster.
Nepal Flood Relief: Global Diaspora Response
GoFundMe's Nepal Flood Relief Hub has raised over $10 million, mostly organized by Nepali-American individuals rather than large NGOs.
United States: Prabas Nepali Samparka Samiti America launched a $10,000 relief campaign for verified government programs. NALCA raised funds for the most affected districts by the flood. NRNA New York held a candlelight vigil in Jackson Heights; a joint campaign by Dari Club USA and NY Nepali Kaam Post raised $6,160 (net $5,953.35) for the PM's Disaster Relief Fund. In California, Taste of the Himalayas hosted a fundraiser with a video link to Nepal's Information Minister;Albany's Nepalese Society raised over $6,000; and tech firm Niural AI launched a $10,000 GoFundMe for employees' families near the Bhote Koshi River.
- Canada:NRNA-Canada moved quickly to organize relief funds, with senior vice-president Punya Marahatta noting the community was still in the "relief," not "rebuild," phase. Toronto's Nepali-Canadian community mobilized locally while awaiting word on missing relatives — the floods also swept up at least 24 Canadian tourists. Separately, Ottawa pledged $5 million in government humanitarian aid through the UN and Red Cross.
- The British Red Cross ran a 24-hour "Race to Respond" 10k challenge (through September 30) combining diaspora and British supporters, tracked via JustGiving.
- Gulf States:NRNA UAE transferred NPR 1,135,249 to NRNA's International Coordination Council, using targeted outreach to affected families. Mobilization also reported in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, though totals are unconfirmed.
- East Asia: ~60 Nepali organizations in South Korea are raising funds, including individual efforts for solar chargers. Japan's ~100,000-strong Nepali community organized via NRNA NCC Japan, aided by a $31,000 Soka Gakkai pledge and a language-school donation drive.
- Australia: NRNA Australia raised AUD 41,093 (≈Rs 4.5 million) from 348 donors for the PM's Disaster Relief Fund, part of NRNA's global Rs 50 million package.
- Within Nepal:Mobile banking/Fonepay QR micro-donations and corporate pledges (IME Group, Gorkha Brewery) are boosting the state relief fund, alongside community events like Kathmandu's charity pottery workshop and a benefit concert by Amit Jung & The Gorkhey.
The real story isn't any one donation — it's the pattern. Diaspora groups like NRNA organize, GoFundMe or JustGiving collect the money, and it gets sent to Nepal's PM Relief Fund or the Red Cross. Each campaign only raised a few thousand dollars — tiny next to the Rs 723 billion Nepal needs to rebuild. But added up, they show diaspora communities in at least seven countries staying engaged for weeks, long after the disaster stopped making headlines.
