The United States plans to provide an additional $31 million to support Nepal's flood recovery, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker said Tuesday, meeting Nepal's Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The pledge brings total US assistance for Nepal's flood response to more than $36 million.
The new package includes $10 million for permanent, custom-built bridges to be sourced from a US company to replace transportation infrastructure damaged by the floods; $8 million for water, sanitation, hygiene, shelter and livelihoods support; and $13 million for US-made drones to support future disaster recovery.
Hooker conveyed US sympathy for flood victims, including the families of roughly 70 Americans still unaccounted for. The pledge builds on earlier US contributions since the August 26 floods, including $3.6 million in humanitarian aid and $1 million in forensic support to Nepal Police.
