On the morning of 26 August, part of a glacier on Langtang Lirung broke away and fell more than a kilometre. The ice melted from the sheer force of the impact, and a wall of water, rock and mud tore down the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli valleys at around 180 kilometres an hour. It destroyed the Gyirong border crossing, swept away villages, and filled hydropower tunnels where hundreds of workers were at work.
