Four of the five people killed when a school bus plunged down a steep slope in Pokhara on earlier today have been identified.
The victims are Mamata Tiwari, 15; Asim Kandel, 13; Subechchha Tiwari, 15; and Baburam Tiwari, 65. The fifth victim, a girl believed to be about 15, had not been identified.
The bus, operated by Kalika Boarding School, crashed near Okhlebhir in Pokhara Metropolitan City-28 on the morning of October 9, 2026, while returning from Majhthana. It reportedly fell 150 to 200 meters.
The dead include students and a local resident who had reportedly boarded the bus while seeking a lift.
The injured include schoolchildren, the bus driver and a police constable hurt during the rescue operation.
Some were treated at Western Regional Hospital and others at Gandaki Medical College.
Pokhara Metropolitan City has formed a five-member committee to investigate the crash. It is coordinated by senior education officer Badrinath Subedi and includes a mechanical engineer, an education committee member and police personnel. The committee has five days to submit its report. Its work includes examining the cause and recommending measures to improve school vehicle safety and student transportation.
The condition of the injured, the name of the fifth victim and the final casualty count remain to be confirmed.
