The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), or CPN-UML, has decided to hold a national gathering in Kathmandu, with party secretary Mahesh Basnet saying it would take place around mid-November.
The decision was made at the party’s Standing Committee meeting on October 8, 2026.
“We will hold the national gathering around mid-November,” Basnet said.
The gathering is expected to bring together provincial and district office-bearers, local-level party leaders and elected representatives from federal, provincial and local levels. Basnet said it would follow meetings at lower levels of the organization.
The party has not publicly confirmed a final date.
The party also scheduled ward- and local-level conventions for December, with provincial-level gatherings to follow. Local-level conventions are set for December 19. The party also discussed filling vacant district chairperson positions in 13 districts.
At the same meeting, former President Bidya Devi Bhandari took the oath as a senior UML leader. The meeting was chaired by party chair KP Sharma Oli.
The gathering follows the party’s defeat in the March 5, 2026, House of Representatives election. In a political document, UML acknowledged internal weaknesses as one factor but said the result also reflected public mood and the wider electoral environment. It said the defeat should not be treated solely as a personal failure of Oli.
