China has formally transferred an artificial intelligence-based weather forecasting system customized for Nepal , named "MAZU-Nepal" to Nepal's Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.
MAZU stands for MAZU standing for multi-hazard, alert, zero-gap and universal.China's Meteorological Administration (CMA) transferred the system during the Second China-Central Asia Meteorological Cooperation Forum in Urumqi, Xinjiang.
Majhu-Nepal draws data from China's Fengyun weather satellites and uses an advanced Chinese AI model to deliver real-time weather data. A senior WMO Beijing engineer, Hua Wenli, said the system is not merely a cloud-based weather information system but a high-quality tool meant to help Nepal make timely decisions.
CMA said it will provide technical training on the system and that its main purpose is early disaster warning and protecting lives and property.
The handover follows the devastating Bhotekoshi flood around August 26, 2026, after which China has provided ongoing weather-related support to Nepal, including earlier cloud-based access to the system in late August.
