A footbridge with lifts is close to finished on the Ring Road at Kusunti Height. It is meant to help older people, people with disabilities, patients and parents with young children cross a busy road without climbing stairs.
The construction is in its final stage and the aim is to open it before or shortly after the Chhath festival.
What is being built
The overpass is in Lalitpur Metropolitan City-13 and has a lift on each side. Lalitpur Metropolitan City is paying for it. The bridge’s designer, Binod Neupane, has said the nearby Patan Hospital and the older people and patients who use the area were reasons for putting accessibility first. Designers and local officials describe it as Nepal’s first overpass of its kind with lifts.
Cost and contractors
- Contract value: Rs 46.89 million
- Contractor: Lama Pragati-Mani Buddha JV
- Consultant: DB Multi-Engineering
- Work began: March 2024
- Planned completion: 12 months from the agreement
Why it is late
Part of the delay is due to problems with the steel framework. Defects were found during installation, so some parts had to be removed, refitted and tested again. Some components were sent back for corrective work.
City officials say accidents on this stretch made a safer crossing necessary.
Why lifts matter
Ordinary footbridges depend on stairs, which many people find hard or impossible. A lift only helps if it keeps working, so upkeep and a plan for breakdowns matter as much as the build.
