The Nepal Electricity Authority earned more than Rs 5 billion from electricity exports during Bhadra (Aug 17-Sept 16).
Power was sold through two channels: bilateral agreements with the Indian states of Haryana and Bihar accounted for 421.62 million units and Rs 3.64 billion in revenue, while 143.99 million units were sold through the open electricity market (including the Indian Energy Exchange), generating Rs 1.45 billion.
This came even as the Bhote Koshi floods knocked out an estimated 10% of national generation capacity.
"Even in the challenging situation... Nepal has exported more than 565.6 million units of electricity in the month of Bhadra," said Energy Minister Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, calling it "a significant achievement," and noting exports actually improved compared to last year.
Exports to Bangladesh remain suspended after floods damaged the Chilime and Trishuli hydropower projects.
Growing export revenue during a month of major flood-related capacity loss suggests Nepal's broader hydropower fleet still has real spare capacity even as flood-hit plants stay offline and reconstruction costs mount.
