From repair to rebuild: Nepal's suspension bridge recovery after the floods

The government has begun its work on repairing and rebuilding of suspension bridges (jhulunge pul) damaged by the Bhote Koshi floods, with 20 bridges already under repair and bidding opened for 33 more that require full reconstruction.

Of the 64 suspension bridges that were operating in the flood-affected Trishuli-Muglin corridor before the disaster, 53 were damaged directly resulting on the isolation of communities from the daily commute, grocery and other essential supplies as the bridges are the primary link connecting hill settlements to markets.

Five bridges Mahesh Dobhan-Master, Kalikasthan, Malinga-Majhuwatar, Keureni-Gahate, and Pimaltar-Jagaram Khola are already showing repair progress and are expected to be completed within a month.

The bid for the 33 bridges requiring full reconstruction is scheduled to open Asoj 5, with individual project costs ranging from roughly Rs 45 lakh to Rs 9.5 crore depending on the bridge.
