Heavy snow and continuous rain have stopped travel at the Hilsa border in northern Humla and left 41 stranded. The weather has also disrupted the Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage route.
Immigration Officer Bimal Poudel said movement across the border has stopped completely. The Hilsa-Taklakot road is blocked by snow and the stranded people cannot go any further than Hilsa. They had reached Hilsa before the snowfall.
Armed Police Force DSP Nanda Bahadur Saud about 2 to 2.5 feet ( about 60 to 75 cm) of snow has piled up in Hilsa. The snowfall began in late September and was heavy in the days just after.
Chinese authorities have suspended border movement for Kailash Mansarovar pilgrims because of the snow. Crews are working to open the road on the Chinese side.
Locals and security personnel are clearing snow on the Nepali side. The main road leading to Hilsa is covered in thick snow, which makes the work even more complicated. Officials say clearing on the Nepali side is expected to take longer than on the Chinese side because pilgrims must Nara lake to reach Hilsa.
Pema Lama, an immigration staff member stationed at Hilsa, said the border is expected to reopen from October 4,2026 (Asoj 18). The date depends on the weather and how quickly the work is done.
