Narayan Gopal Gurubacharya is a singer and composer whose songs are still played and loved in Nepal, decades after his death. On October 4,2026, Nepali music fans marks his 87th birth anniversary.

Who was Narayan Gopal?

He was a singer and composer of modern Nepali music. He also worked in films, dramas and ballets. He is described as one of the first professional singers in Nepali music and many people see his songs as a foundation of modern Nepali music.

Why is he called "Swar Samrat"?

"Swar Samrat" means "Emperor of Voice." it is the title he is best known by and it reflects how people see his sweet,rich voice. He is also sometimes called the " Tragedy King" because many of his love songs carry deep sadness.

When and where he was born?

He was born on October 4, 1939 (Ashoj 18, 1996 BS) in Kilagal Tole, Kathmandu, into a Newar (Chathariya Shrestha) family. His father, Asha Gopal Gurubacharya, was a classical musician. His mother was Ram Devi Gurubacharya. He was the second eldest son among nine siblings.

How did he get into music?

His father wanted him to learn classical music, and he went to India to study it. Later, he turned toward modern, or adhunik, Nepali music. He also kept up his studies. He passed the School Leaving Certificate (S.L.C.) in 1959 and then earned a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities from Tri-Chandra College in Kathmandu.

How long was his career?

He worked as a recording and performing artist for about 28 years. In that time, he sang in 18 films and recorded more than 150 songs. People remember him for his melodious voice, meaningful lyrics and the feeling in his singing.

What awards did he receive?

He won many honors, and several of them came after his death. They include:

  • Gorkha Dakshin Bahu, a national honor
  • Ratna Record Award
  • Best Composition and Best Singer from Radio Nepal
  • Indra Rajya Laxmi Award
  • Urbashi Rang Award

How did he die?

He died on December 5, 1990 (Mangsir 19, 2047 BS) at around 9:00 PM at Bir Hospital in Kathmandu. He was 51 years old. Reports say the causes were complications of diabetes and kidney failure. His 36th death anniversary falls on December 5, 2026.

His life drew public attention beyond his music, and he was linked with several controversies. Some people close to him said many of those stories were only speculation.

Why do people still remember him?

Decades after his death, his songs remain popular because of their fine musical craft and their emotional lyrics. His death anniversary is marked every year, including a tribute on the 35th anniversary in 2025.
