President Paudel ends current parliamentary session

President Paudel's decision has formally concluded the current session of the Federal Parliament. Parliamentary business is now suspended, and the government will convene a new session only when necessary. This decision was made under Article 93 (2) of the Constitution, based on the Council of Ministers' recommendation.

President Ram Chandra Paudel has ended the current session of the current Parliament. Following the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, the session of both houses was prorogued effective midnight of 16 Asoj ( 1 OCT 2026), the Office of the President has announced.

With the session ended, all parliamentary business is temporarily suspended. The government can convene a new session only when deemed necessary, and any pending bills or proposals will be taken up again when the session resumes.

According to Krishna Bahadur Rawat, spokesperson for the Office of the President, President Paudel ended the ongoing session of both the House of Representatives and the National Assembly based on the Council of Ministers' recommendation dated 13 Ashoj. The decision takes effect from midnight on 16 Ashoj.

Article 93(2) of Nepal's Constitution empowers the President to convene and end parliamentary sessions on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers. The current session was ended in accordance with this provision.

What does ending a session mean?

  • Session eded means the current sitting of Parliament is concluded.
  • No parliamentary meetings will be held and no bills, proposals or debates will proceed for now.
  • The government can call a new session only when it deems necessary.
  • When the session resumes, any pending bills, proposals and discussions will be taken up again.
    • This is not a dissolution of Parliament, members retain their seats.

    Why was the session ended?

    The government made the recommendation to end the session through a Council of Ministers meeting. Such decisions are typically made for the following reasons:
    • After major bills scheduled for discussion have been passed.
    • When the government needs time to prepare new policy agendas.
    • If the political or administrative circumstances make it unsuitable to continue parliamentary business.
    • To manage timing around festivals, budget formulation or other important activities.
    The specific reason for this session's conclusion has not been publicly detailed yet.
