Bus driver sets fire to own vehicle in Kathmandu

A 25 year old public bus driver, Dawa Lama, was critically injured with roughly 90% burns after he set fire to his own bus in Tripureshwor on Monday.

Apparently the act was attempted after a dispute with traffic police over honking in a no-horn zone.

Police say Lama made passengers exit the vehicle before setting the fire and no attempt made afterwards to flee supports their initial assessment that the act was self-inflicted.

"Based on the information we have so far, it appears that he set the bus on fire himself," said SP Naresh Subedi, though police say the investigation, including questioning of passengers, is ongoing.

A formal probe committee has since been formed.

Lama remains in critical condition at Kirtipur Burn Hospital.
